This honey bee focused in-school field trip includes a real life hive of honey bees! Barb Kreller has been involved with honey bees for 30 years. She grew up on a "hobby" bee farm that developed into a commercial honey production apiary. This life provided her a lot of experience and knowledge about honey bees. The Bee School Program started with an idea to show a busy and beautiful honey bee colony safely in an observation hive to the classes where her own children were learning. It was clear very quickly that students, teachers and other staff thought this was a really unique, fun and interesting experience.
Over the past few years Barb has been researching ever more detailed information on the life of honey bees; planning for the growth of Bee School. She found an awesome new observation hive, and Jason (the head bee keeper) has figured out the logistics of keeping the bees happy and healthy while still allowing the children to look as closely as possible with complete safety. Being invited into school classrooms, Brownie groups, Libraries and community halls has been the highlight of the past few years.
Open from May 27, 2023 until the end of August, this program is for a HALF DAY visit to your School from 9am until 12:30pm. If you have more than 3 groups to visit the bees please select the FULL DAY option from our menu.
- Half day option includes 3 hours presenting in a library, lab, or general use area. Typically this option accommodates 1-3 class groups of children.
- Full day option includes 6 hours presenting as above to accommodate up to 7 classes.
During Bee School everyone will hear information on life cycle, the physical and social structure of the hive, as well as the bee keeping tools and hard work it takes to keep the bees healthy and thriving. Of course there is also time for each child to get close to the hive to discover the bees, and all the different parts of the hive for themselves.
There is a half day minimum for a Public or Catholic School to select, no matter how many groups would be participating. If you have more than 3 groups, please select the Full Day Program which will allow for up to 6 or 7 classes depending on the school schedule.
Notes: * Edmonton Public School teachers can find me in the vendor list under the name Barbara L. Kreller as the company name.
**All Bee School days begin at 9am. We want to make sure the bees get home to fly as soon as possible, while visiting as many classes as possible, so a half day can not be booked to begin in the afternoon.
